1. Fer a Cheval Restaurant Review

The Fer a Cheval is a favourite for lunch and a social apres-ski drink thanks to the large sun drenched terrace on the main road which links the town centre with the main lift station, Medran.

As I walked up the high-street I noticed the daily specials on the chalk board and simply couldn't resist stopping in to try the vodka flamed king prawns on a sun-dried tomato flavoured spaghetti. Being in Verbier and ordering something as fancy as king prawns, you could be forgiven for thinking that it would cost a fortune, but as the dish of the day it also came with a lovely salad starter, fresh bread and cost 24 CHF for a very tasty 2 course lunch. The quality of the food represented good value for money and I would happily come back to eat there again.

In the evenings the menu is largely made up of traditional Swiss mountain dishes with hearty portion sizes to satisfy even the hungriest of skiers, with a very cosy downstairs dining room with various sized alcoves to cater for groups and couples alike.

Offshore Cafe Review, Verbier - Centre

2. Offshore Cafe Review

Whether you need a big breakfast, some fuel for the mountain or recovery from a late night, Offshore’s here to start your day.

Already a popular choice for lunch and after-ski snacks, they have some great options on their breakfast menu too. With the breakfast menu being served from 8am until midday, it’s a perfect hangout for both early birds and late risers. Around late morning, my friends and I sat down to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and surf shack-style interior whilst grabbing some brunch.

Offshore have a range of fresh made-to-order juices and smoothies from their juice bar, and all of the ingredients are pressed, squeezed and helped into the glass by the talented bar staff. You can't often find fresh juices in Verbier but Offshore has a great selection to make you feel healthy. They also have milkshakes that are so thick and tasty, they made me feel like a kid again. I challenge you to finish one whilst eating a meal – I dare you!

The menu has a wide selection of dishes from fun categories including the Burger Shack, the Ranch and the Mexican Offshore Cocina. We were able to have a taste from both the breakfast and main menu so decided to go for the Eggs Benedict "Vikings Special", a refreshing Scandinavian take on breakfast, and the Huevos Rancheros, a tasty mix of traditional breakfast ingredients with a spicy Mexican twist. We followed this with the 200g BBQ Steak and a Chicken Burrito. The steak was tender, soft and perfectly cooked; it was way above the standard you would expect from high-end restaurants with much higher prices. The Chicken Burrito was so delicious, my friend had almost devoured it before I could have a taste!

After eating all of that we were stuffed, but felt we had to try the pancakes. They say on the menu that they are probably the best in the world, and they are really not that far off! The chocolate, the syrup, the softness, everything was so tasty. I have no idea how they get them that big; they’re as big as the mountains outside.

Offshore’s charm is not just the great food – it’s a fun place to hang out for locals, seasonnaires and visitors to Verbier. The restaurant’s style is up beat with young, friendly staff, good music, the latest ski films on TV and a bright pink VW beetle right in the middle of the restaurant. If you look closely, you might even spot a few famous windsurfs hanging from the ceiling!

We really enjoyed our time in Offshore, chatting in the relaxed atmosphere, eating some good food and some of us getting rid of our hangover. One last tip: be sure to ask about the ‘Seasonnaire Sandwich’, an off-menu local secret that will keep you filled for a whole day on the mountain!

Thanks Offshore :)

3. Etoile Rouge Supper Club Review

A new way of dining and partying has arrived this season with Scandinavian and Eastern European influences.

Etoile Rouge is in a class of its own for atmosphere, taste and originality. With its floral patterns and decadent red colours owning the wall space and fittings, you really feel like you have been whisked away somewhere special.

The grand entrance hall and stairs are decorated with Scandinavian portraits and the ceiling is covered with a 'Baroque' period painting from the 1600's. It oozes class and opulence. It's extravagant, but not in a way you feel uncomfortable, you feel relaxed and excited to enter the main room.

We were seated down on a cute white-clothed table and offered to try some Aqavit before we start eating, while the Live DJ (Olivier Hosts on this night) created the vibe with some oldskool soul. Aqavit is an infused spirit of spice and herbs from Scandinavia and is a fine drop before eating.

Our meal started with a varied selection of Caviar (the waiter explained in great detail how each one tasted), served with bilinis, creme fråiche and fondue butter. I know Caviar is a taste not everybody loves, but they have such a broad selection that anyone can find something they'd enjoy. It was served on a bed of crushed ice in a large silver bowl and looked fantastic. We tried the Saint James and the Oscietra. The Saint James was a stronger taste to the Oscietra, which had a saltier taste, both had a creamy texture and were eaten very quickly!

For the main event we went with 6 dishes (we were hungry). The fois gras which was pan fried and melted in your mouth. It was served with tiny chopped apples and mango chutney, such a different mix of flavours that worked really well.

The Tartar de Boeuf was smoky and rich, along with the wild mushrooms and hazelnuts it was served with. The Kamchatka Crab came detached from its shell, so it was easy to slide out and eat, and was fresh and light, accompanied by a fennel and apple salad. The St. Jaques (scallops) came with a creamy truffle sauce - the staff told me it is the most popular dish they serve and I can see why. It fell off my pearl and gold fork into my mouth with such ease...

When I saw lamb chops served as meatballs on the menu, I just had to try them and I was not disappointed. They had a herby and spicy flavour to them, definitely a new and interesting way of eating lamb chops!

Just as we finished our food, the lights got a little dimmer and the music turned up a notch. We began to see the other tables get up and start dancing, helped by a little Vodka in their system no doubt! We ordered a couple shots ourselves of Zubrovka (Polish Vodka with a blade of grass in the bottle) and got up started dancing too.

Our meal was accompanied with some fine cocktails made from head barman Johan Demarre. We had the 'Etoile Rouge' and the 'Gagarine Fizz' both of which were fruity and tasted really good. After dinner we moved onto something stronger, and went with the cocktail named after the famous Russian Author Leo Tolstoy the 'Tolstoy Swizzle' and the 'Kiss Yo Mama' which isn't named after a Famous Russian Author... Both had the right amount of kick and were shaken perfectly.

When you go out for the night, you want to feel that you are taken on a journey and for that night, I felt like I was whisked away to far away land and that it was all just dream, but then I remembered, hey, I'm going back there again tomorrow night!

Etoile Rouge know how to throw a party too. Every Tuesday they will be hosting the after party for Mardi Blah, which their sister company Le Rouge host from 8pm. Underground house/tech DJ's will be coming from all over the world to rock the night. Later on in the year, they will host other special events with the Drum Warrior and Martin Solveig, stay tuned to the events calendar to find out more.

4. Le Bec Brasserie review

Le Bec brasserie has been established in Verbier for a good few years now and is hugely popular with locals and holidaymakers alike.

As you walk inside you can feel yourself relax in its contemporary atmosphere. It welcomes everyone from the ski booted and suited, to a family out dining for lunch and everything in between.

I felt a rumble of agreement as soon as I opened the menu. All areas are covered here - breakfast, lunch and dinner. New this year on their breakfast menu are more hot, delicious options. You can get a mighty breakfast burrito which will be sure to set you on the right path for the day, keeping you energised for all the adventurous activities on offer in Verbier. The sister to the Burrito is the breakfast pancake which is an indulgent treat, especially when you add optional bacon into the mix. If you are looking for a quick fix before jumping on the lifts at Medran Station you can pop in for a pasty and a top notch coffee too. Prices for breakfast range from 3CHF to 15CHF.

a lot of drinks at the bar

If you are having a day off the mountain or find yourself searching for a good lunch spot this place is well known by the locals. They accept walk ins and will always try their best to seat you, but if you are required to wait for a table, you can easily entertain yourself with a browse in neighbouring Mountain Air which will be sure to tempt you with a purchase or two. If you are in a big crowd and want to be sure of a seat, you can always ring ahead and book.

The lunch menu has a variety of options from slow roasted pork (12 hours to be precise) to a quinoa salad. Once you have made your choice of main a range of fresh bread is delivered with a variety of flavours to suit everyone at the table.

a platter of food

I chose from the three plat du jour options and opted for the sumptuous lamb, roasted vegetables and dauphinoise potatoes. It was presented beautifully and as a rather generous portion. I was struck with 'nosy food eyes' and had a look about the peoples plates around me, discovering that they also had good sized, delicious and very vibrant looking meals. Lunch is served from 11:30 until 16:00 and prices range from 18CHF to 29CHF.

a bread selection

The staff are attentive and the drink selection extensive. I would go as far as to say there is a drink to match every mood and occasion - cocktails, wines (hot and cold), beers, fresh juices, and a nice variety of teas and coffees. You can peruse the black boards dotted around the restaurant which detail the specials of the day for drinks, main meals and desserts.

As I finished my meal I got intrigued as to what they offered as far as evening meals and it turns out I will have to return again! They lured me in with the variety of burgers and all the snacks you could desire after a long day on the hill. It all equates perfectly with the deserved apres ski re-filling. The serving times for the apres ski menu is from 16:00 until 19:00.

I would recommend this place for their varied and accommodating menu. You can be vegetarian, gluten free, lactose intolerant, a baby, a junior, or just a rather hungry human and you'll be able to order something appealing.

To find Le Bec, head to Medran Lift Station and follow the road along to a square and it is conjoined with the well known shop Mountain Air. There are numerous car parks spread around Verbier so you can drive here, walk, or hop on a bus (the latter of which are free of charge).

I would most definitely recommend a visit to Le Bec. It's open from 08:30 until 19:00 every day.

5. Farinet Restaurant Review

In all the years that I have been in Verbier the Farinet has always offered food and so I thought I knew ahead of time what to expect...however I was very surprised.

After being seated at around 7pm, my girlfriend and I ordered cocktails - the Clover Club and the Hemingway Daiquiri, which both date back to the prohibition days. The Clover Club was made perfectly with the right balance of gin, raspberry, lemon juice and the egg white giving a smooth layer on top of the drink.

Everyone has heard of a Daiquiri, but it has so many variations that each place you go can offer a different drink. I like that this restaurant have chosen the Hemingway, which for me is the best rum cocktail. We enjoyed these as we decided on what food we would order.

The menu is Asian tapas style with a variety of sharing platters. We went for the one called "The Mountain" - which is literally a mountain of food for 97CHF! It comes with beef sliders, sweet potato falafel, Thai crab cakes (we ask for these instead of the fries), some of the biggest prawns we have ever seen, cod bites, onion rings, crispy pork belly, an amazing salad, garlic forgasse (a home-made bread), sticky BBQ ribs and mini burgers.

These might all sound just like snacks, but the portions are big and each dish is cooked to perfection by head Chef Ashleigh and her team. The smaller details in the dishes have really made a difference, for example. the cod bits and onion rings are all fried in soda water and Corona beer which gives the batter a thinner and crunchier texture. The sauces that accompany the dishes are out of this world, the spicy sauce with the prawns and the home-made tartar sauce that comes with the cod bites are both irresistible.

After eating all of that, we did actually manage to fit in a bit of desert, churros and marshmallows. All of the dishes in the restaurant are served on either slate or chunks of wood, and the marshmallows were no exception. However, this desert also comes with a mini fire pit to cook your marshmallows, and we certainly had a lot of fun trying to set them on fire! The churros came with an irresistible chocolate and caramel dipping sauce...they were epic!

If you are in Verbier with kids then there is a great children's menu with mini burgers, pizza, fries and a fun colouring book to keep them entertained, whilst you sip on some cocktails. Plus all of the food (aside from maybe 3 or 4 dishes) are all gluten and dairy free. To have that in the Swiss Alps is a rarity and should not be taken for granted for how hard they work to provide that service. It certainly doesn't compromise the taste of the food!

All in all it was a great experience, from the music to the service, and of course the food. I think the only negative is that no one knows how good the food is! So don't be scared to get yourselves down there whilst you are on holiday. Between the 2 of us we paid 70CHF each for a huge amount of food and some amazing cocktails. If you are drinking beer or wine then you can expect it to be a bit cheaper still. A group of 4 should work out to pay around 50CHF each and trust me...you will not be leaving hungry!

Le Bec Brasserie Review

6. Le Bec Brasserie Review

Being only its second year, Le Bec Brasserie has already got a fantastic reputation for its food and daytime atmosphere at the new meeting point of Verbier; Place Blanche.

Viktor Vestberg the head Chef at Le Bec is dedicated to making great food and has done in Verbier for over 10 years.

Le Bec has a new a new Aprés Ski menu for you all to enjoy. Located just a few steps away from the end of the piste, in 30 seconds you can be sat down enjoying the spacious and stylish bar. Start with one of their half priced cocktails* made from one of their expert barman. They do not have a menu for the cocktails as they can make anything you want, which always means you can trust the bartender.

Sipping on an espresso martini and a classic mojito watching the skiers taking of their skis, we got to ordering the food. We chose the mini burger, Quesadilas, Lamb Rolls, Meatballs and Pulled beef with a crisp tortilla. It was a good amount of food between two after a hard skiing. The main burger on the lunch is really tasty and so is the mini burger. It is not exactly 'mini' it is still a good size for a burger.

We were a little confused about the lamb rolls coming with goats cheese, but after trying them with the mint dip too, it all worked so well. We were very impressed. The meatballs can't go amiss at any time, the spicy tomato sauce is so gooood. The quesadilas are nice and fresh with the chimichurri salsa and add some of the pulled beef on top of that for an insider tip!

Open all year round Le Bec is the new hub of Verbier, with everyone buzzing around it is a haven to grab some food a drink. Ask for the Homemade Lemonade, it is a life saver..

7. TBAR is Reborn

The newly renovated TBAR in the centre of town has played host to some legendary parties over a 10 year period in Verbier. With new control,a new look and new bar menus, now is the time to go in and enjoy everything they have to offer.

With some great snacks and finger food on the menu, we wanted to dry the earl grey martini, which is just what we were looking for. Really refreshing and a perfect drink after a long day on the mountain. Of course with the extra cold Heineken tap, we couldn't say no to that either!

Back to the food, we dived into Haddock Gouilons, Dumplings, Calamari and Seared Sesame Tuna, all arrived very quickly and all went down deliciously. The Dumplings came in a good spiced sweet and chilli sauce (none of that week stuff) and so did the haddock, a nice tartare dipping sauce. The Tuna is so tasty and for me the best on the menu and for the quality, the best deal. TBAR also provide sharing platters and if you order more then 3 plates, you get a house drink included in the price, how good is that?

Among great food and drink, TBAR also host live music on wednesdays with the world FAMOUS Faye and continue the live music on Friday and Saturdays. It is a busy place, so reserve your space at the bar and soak it all in, Take advantage of the great quality and price at TBAR and go wild at the end of the season with expert staff making some real expert drinks and food.

See you down there!
