Verbier Apres Ski Report: 27th January 2012

BBQs, blood, gore & more

So, it’s been smiles all round resort this week as the clouds rolled in, the heavens opened and kindly dropped off about half a metre of the fluffy stuff. And don’t for one second expect those grins to fade, there’s more on the way – with another dusting forecast this weekend. It’s a great time to be in Verbier! Ski hard, party hard has consequently been the vibe around town as both holidaymakers and seasonaires burned the slopes by day and the candle by night.

Hed Kandi continued its Saturday night residency as DJ Krystal Roxx stirred up a frenzy in Farinet Lounge and Casbah. Predictable as he is aloof, Johnny was glimpsed lining up cocktails and tearing up receipts along the busy bars all night. The après spirit has been in full swing at Le Rouge as always, where beers in the sunshine made for a perfect end to a deep powder day on the slopes. Spy Glass continued to rock Apres @ the Farinet over last weekend and their sets of classic anthems always went down a storm (with particular appreciation for the extended guitar solo to Sultan’s of Swing - one of JT’s favourites). The time came for them to hand over the stage to the Red Models, who will now provide the resident rock for the next week or so. As always, head down with your hangovers to Seasonaire Wednesdays for cut-price jugs of beer.

The dead resurfaced with a vengeance for Zombie night at Pub Mont Fort and Casbah on Tuesday – and what a night it was! Face paint, blood, bandages, ripped shirts and even morph suits were all items JT, for one, had been waiting to dust off from the wardrobe. Sunshine, sausages and scooners were ordered in abundance by Le Rouge on Thursday as they had the barbie out to celebrate Aussie Day on the terrace from 3pm, with yellow and gold shots filling the tables as the sun went down.

If, after a hectic week, you’re looking to get a break from it all and are interested in spending a night high in the mountains - 2,457 metres to be precise - then you should definitely book to stay at the Cabane de Mont Fort for a night. For approx. 90CHF, you can have a hearty supper, accommodation for the night, breakfast and the opportunity to carve some fresh tracks the next morning before the crowds start to fill the hill. With the conditions as they are, get up there quick!

So as we bid farewell to January and roll onwards and upwards into February this week, here’s what is in the pipeline in the coming days. Keep an eye out (or probably both) this Friday, as the Farinet Lounge turns all Moulin Rouge. Brand new each month, the Lounge and Casbah will be presenting a variety of performers that will whisk you back to the 1920s. This week, bringing their tailor made burlesque show all the way from London, come ‘The It Girls’ – so dig out your 1920s threads and head down from 10pm.

If some live music tickles your fancy then T Bar has a great line up this weekend, with Mikey Gray playing on Saturday and the ever popular Faye on Sunday from 9:30pm. Pub Mont Fort is screening the iconic ‘Blizzard of AAHHHs’ on Monday evening if you’re in need of a chilled start to the week. If you haven’t seen it, expect retro neon, mohawks, onesies and er, lots more retro neon. This movie set the bar for what extreme skiing movies could and would become. DJ Ratty is busting out the Hip Hop in Casbah on Tuesday, which will no doubt be as popular as ever. Bartenders of Verbier go head to head on Wednesday, as Coup d’Etat hosts for the 4th year the Mixology Competition 2012. Pop along from 10pm to support your local favourites.

Panto season is just around the corner in town – Verbier Amateur Dramatics Association (VADA) is putting on Three Little Pigs in the cinema just off Place Central on 8th and 15th February. Tickets are available from T Bar, Harolds and the European Snowsports desk in Mountain Air, 20CHF for adults and 10CHF for kids under 16. All proceeds go to the Fondation Janyce that supports families who have children with cancer. So a great cause and great fun – get your tickets now! He’s behind you. Sorry.

Happy Friday everyone!
