Top tips for first time skiers in Verbier 2019
Five things for learners to consider this coming season
Going skiing for the first time can seem daunting. Spending all day outside in the cold, on top of the mountains, sliding down the hill on two slippery planks that have no brakes. It can sound a little bit crazy.
But in actual fact skiing can be an enjoyable way to spend time with friends and family, exploring beautiful scenery of the 4 Vallées whilst enjoying a fun activity. If you’re feeling overwhelmed about your first time skiing in Verbier, don’t worry. We’ve got five tips to make your first time go smoothly.

Get in shape before your ski holiday
Skiing is a physically demanding sport, there’s no denying it. As a beginner skier you’ll likely find it more tiring than a seasoned pro, as you’ll be exercising muscles that aren’t used to such an extent as during this intense activity. On top of this, beginner skiing technique also tends to be more physically demanding. It’s a good idea to put in some time in the gym before your trip to prevent any injuries that can easily be avoided. Compound exercises like squats and deadlifts are a great way to target the multiple muscle groups commonly used in skiing, as well as building core strength. On top of this, some cardio work such as running or cycling is helpful to increase endurance and cardiovascular fitness, meaning you’ll be able to ski for longer without wearing out on the slopes.

Pack enough food and drink for the day
As with any activity, it’s important to keep hydrated and refuelled while skiing. Days can be long and tiring, and keeping yourself well fed will give you the energy to make the most of your holiday. Taking a sandwich and some energy bars out on the slopes with you is a great way to keep costs down, but stopping off at one of the many fantastic mountain restaurants in Verbier is also a great option. Take a refillable water bottle out with you as well, as it’s easier than you’d think to become dehydrated while skiing. Although tempting, it’s best to leave alcohol alone while you’re on the slopes, especially while learning. At altitude, the effects of alcohol will hit you faster, and this can be risky if your already limited ability is impaired.

Take the proper equipment
Using the correct equipment is absolutely vital at any level of skiing. Using ski gear that is not suited to your ability will hinder your progression and confidence, overall making things far less enjoyable. For first time skiers, it’s best to rent your equipment, rather than buying it. The large amount of ski shops in Verbier are well equipped with the best of this season’s skis and boots. All the staff are hugely knowledgeable and helpful, knowing what equipment will suit your ability best, and you can easily change your boots throughout the week if they don’t fit you.
It’s definitely worth investing in a good pair of ski goggles and helmet too. The better your ski goggles, the more definition you will see in the snow, and the less chance there’ll be of them fogging up. The value of a good helmet is potentially immeasurable. Nowadays almost everyone wears a helmet while skiing, and it’s an absolute must as a beginner. As for clothing, you’ll need a good ski jacket and ski pants, plus well insulated gloves, thermals and something to cover your face from the wind and cold. It’s important to layer well when skiing, and our advice would be to take a spare layer in a rucksack with you. It’s better to be too hot than wishing you’d brought an extra jumper.

Take professional ski lessons
Building a proper foundation of good technique is the most important step to becoming an advanced skier. Without it, bad habits can prevent you from improving, and can potentially lead to a higher risk of injury. In Verbier there are plenty of terrific ski schools and instructors to choose from. Private lessons will offer a more intense learning experience, as the instructor will have more time to personally focus on improving your technique. Another option is to join onto a group lesson, which is a fun way to meet other holidaymakers. Expect lots of laughter and embarrassing moments.

Don’t give up
Progressing as a skier might seem like a challenge at first. Everyone falls over once in a while, even the professionals. Hold on in there though, because as your ability improves, so too will your enjoyment for the sport. You’d be surprised how quickly you’ll find yourself carving parallel turns down wide open reds and blacks. Even if you’re struggling, take a moment to sit back and appreciate the gorgeous scenery. It’s not often you’re surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks and beautiful alpine architecture.
