Verbier Activity Review: 12th August 2011

The summer rolls by at an increasing speed with winter now a mere three months away. The weather which had over the last couple weeks been mixed and stormy did give way in the end to some beautiful sunny days.

It did not matter to me as I spent wet and dry times on the downhill bike courses around Verbier. Conditions have been generally good as regular showers have stopped the tracks from becoming too dry and difficult to brake on. Up the mountain the mixed weather has not put off the many walkers and parapenters enjoying the incredible views but down in resort things are now noticeably quieter after the music festival finished at the end of July.

This is great news for those wanting to come to Verbier and relax in the mountains as there is plenty of space to find your own piece of mountain paradise to relax and/ or play in. There is of course enough going on in resort to keep visitors happy and that continues with the Horse riding festival which starts this weekend and runs until the 21st August. This event, featuring some of Switzerland’s and Europe’s greatest riders, offers outstanding entertainment and involves experts and novices alike. www.verbier-cso.com

After the weekend there is a family event on Monday, in La Chaux, that starts at 11am and is called Fête des familles. There will be bouncy castles, a clown and a fairy amongst other things. Check out the www.verbier.ch site for more information on prices and the programme.

Down at the sports centre there is also lots going on. There is an indoor and outdoor pool. There are diving boards, sunbathing areas, volleyball pitches, a children’s play area, table tennis and a shallow area for kids to play in. Also at the sports centre there is go-karting on the ice rink as well as ice skating. Tennis courts and squash courts complete what the sports centre has to offer. The ice go-karting recently had a prestigious race with local dignitaries battling it out on the ice. Florian Gonon a Swiss rally champion also came along and showed off his skills. In town there are still plenty of places open for eating and drinking. Central T-Bar is a great place to head for lunch on the terrace or live music through the evening. Pub Mont Fort has food in the evening until late and Coup d’Etat is open until around two in the morning. At the moment most restaurants in Verbier are open too so there is still plenty of life in town and lots of people enjoying the relaxed summer days and evenings in the beautiful Swiss Alps.
