Verbier Apres Ski Report: 27th February 2013
Six Nations partying amongst more sunny delights
This week has seen some more amazing skiing conditions and although it’s been chilly, the beating sun has been causing ski smiles everywhere. There’s been some great music as well as a gripping rugby match, and with a Verbier Harlem Shake looking to rip up Place Central this Wednesday, there looks to be even more excitement to come.
We’ve had some first-class acoustic fun from everyone’s favourite musician Stevie Appleton, with Thursday night at T-Bar proving to be one of the best pre-Casbah sessions yet. Performing the usual array of foot-tapping classics, the room was rammed from floor to roof, as everyone seemed to get in the groove.
With England’s most important game of the Six Nations so far being played last Sunday, the town donned their finest rugby liveries and proceeded to support their national team. With its wide screen TV and avid England fans, T-Bar seemed to be the place to go and supporters flocked from the mountain and into the bar, to create a fantastically wild and boisterous atmosphere. A nerve-racking game saw France constantly chasing the English lead, but to no avail and we proceeded to rip the French defence apart. Hands flew sky-high as Manu Tuilagi sped over the line to put England seven points clear and this was to signal the end for the French offence. As they failed to re-vitalise their flailing team, the chants of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” echoed around the bar and the energetic crowed provided a spectacle in themselves. With England’s next match being on Sunday 10th March, head on down to T-Bar to get the patriotic juices flowing.
Back in the real world, Sunday evening is a time-to chuck another log on the fire, put on your comfiest slippers and kick back to some quality relaxing time. In Verbier, this concept is completely alien. Super Soif Sundays at The Loft Bar seems to be the new way to prepare yourself for the coming week’s revelries. Presented by Verbier Seasonaires, this Sunday saw DJ G play some of the finest House music in the alps and as well as cheap drinks, the social aspect was perfect.
The distinctive allure of doing something different is never to far to reach in the 4 Valleys. With restaurants-a-plenty however, it can often be tricky to decide where you will scoff yourself silly on traditional treats from the Valais canton. If you haven’t already, try a lesser-known restaurant, situated in the La Tzoumaz area over in Savoleyres, called Chez Simon. Taking on the appearance of a rustic cattle ranch, the wooden décor and traditional layout makes it a fine place to spend your midday rest-bite. Using fresh, seasonal and local produce the menu comprises of long-established favourites from the area, such as the assiette Valaisanne (a plate of local meats and cheeses) and lapin à la moutarde avec polenta (rabbit in mustard sauce with polenta). The more expensive menu choices cost around 22 CHF so it’s also affordable and with the terrace being perfectly placed to catch the sun, you could go a lot worse for your mountain meal.
Every corner of Verbier seems to be awash with quality ski shops. So if you’re looking to buy a new pair of skis, the choice can seem daunting and with so many to try, also expensive. Do not fear however, as this weekend sees the Black Crows take over the pistes and après. The Black Weekend as it has been dubbed, consists of a free ski test session on both Saturday and Sunday between 9:00 and 16:00 at The Ice Cube Bar, Les Ruinettes, après ski partying at La Fer a Cheval and a special promo night at Coup d’Etat, starting at 23:00 and going right on through until 4:00am. They’re a world-renowned company so you can be sure of being impressed.
Unless you’ve been residing in a shoebox for the past month, you will have heard of the Harlem Shake. For those recluses that haven’t, it’s a spontaneous and energetic dance routine consisting of as many oddly dressed lunatics as possible gyrating in the most unlikely of places. We’ve seen it in offices, in random bedrooms, even underwater and guess what: now it’s Verbier’s turn! It kicks off in Place Central this Wednesday at 4:45, so grab your most outlandish of robes and finest dance moves, and head on down to join in the fun. If all goes according to plan, it might just go viral….
