Verbier Activity Review: 3rd April 2011

By Lee Fieldsend, Updated

Beautiful spring weather gave way this afternoon to clouds which are forecast to stay on Monday and maybe bring in a little precipitation. The freezing level is very high and expected to rise all the way past 3000 metres over the next few days.

Many of the lower pistes are showing the symptoms of high temperatures and the run down to resort, although open at the moment, does not look as if it will stay open for much longer. The snow on the pistes is starting to degrade after weeks of melting and re-freezing. Although the runs are groomed and frozen in the morning it does not take long for them to melt and turn bumpy.

Off piste the risk of avalanche is 3 out of 5 which is quite high. Most lower south facing slopes are almost bare now. Although there is very little, if any, fresh tracks around it is perfect weather to go touring into the mountains. Para-ponters have been taking advantage of the clear skies and light winds and over the weekend the lift company started to allow bikers to uplift from Le Chable to the resort. There are no designated tracks below Verbier but vehicle tracks and forest tracks are enough at this early stage in the summer.

The lifts are still open for another couple of weeks and conditions are good enough to keep the pistes busy and coupled with the fantastic weather it is a great time to be up in the mountains getting in some turns and starting off that summer tan.

The weather for the next few days looks as if after this cloud goes mid week should be sunny and very warm with light winds and clear blue skies.

There are lots of events going on in town, check out the après ski report for more info.
