featured in Towns & villages Updated

Situated in the south-western part of Switzerland in the canton of the Valais, Verbier is bordered by France to the west and Italy to the south. Drawing its alpine charm from the many traditional chalet-style buildings that harmoniously nestle into the hillside, it has a south-westerly orientation meaning it benefits from being in the sunshine all day long. So, there are many sun terraces for you to kick back and relax on.

Place Centrale is where everything big tends to happen in Verbier. Chalet style buildings surround you in all directions, with the mountains as the perfect backdrop behind. Hotels, ski shops, banks, bars and retail shops are all within a 100m radius.

The first account of skiing in Verbier dates back to 1925 when a group of skiers hiked up from Sembrancher with the sole purpose being to ski back down. At this time the town was inhabited by a few cows and a couple of herdsmen. After the war the Swiss government decided it would make a great place for a ski resort and then in 1946 the first lift system was built. It wasn't until the ski boom of the 1960's that it became a popular destination and cemented itself as one of the leading resorts in the Alps.
